Timber Protection

The study of wood as a renewable material and organic material is what is known as wood science. Wood technology is now the way the tools are utilized in the processes of wood preservation. To be able to study wood it has to be compared to other products. The comparison made against other products will include the features of the material against those of wood, the value and the ease it can be worked on. The utilization of technology gives wood an upper hand in most of this comparison. Some of these advantages include wood being a versatile material that can be used in a wide range of products. Wood is renewable, and this makes it more precious. The other merit is that a part of the harvested material is at the same time used as energy to produce the product.

The good appearance of your timber made structure cannot be guaranteed if protection of the timber is not done. Wooden structures have to be kept away from water and pests that eat through the wood. The moisture courses the timber to decay and the insects eat through the wood. Many methods are available in the treatment of wood one of the most common being the ACQ – alkaline copper Quaternary. This is a copper-based preservative that is applied to the wood for protection. As effective as this preservative, it has some downside to its use. It is a highly corrosive chemical that affects most metals that are used together with the wooden products. The saturation level of any treatment will depend on where the wood is going to be used and the species of the wood. Timber being used around a water body will be dipped in a more saturated fluid than that being used above ground.

The use of copper metal is another method of wood treatment that is fast being accepted. The use of this method is fast being accepted because it is not corroding the metal fasteners. This process is what in other words called the micronized copper wood preservative. A high-pressure liquid that has the copper metal mixed in it is driven into the wood. In other copper-based preservation methods copper is dissolved in chemicals while in this method copper is driven into the wood as a metal. When this process is used to treat timber the timber properties are increased highly. The wood products protected using this method last longer.

Termites and fungal decay are just a few among the many problems wood treated from this method are protected against. Unlike other methods of treatment this method is not corrosive. Extensive research over a period of 10 years has proven the effectiveness of this science as one of the best wood preservation methods.
