Setting up multi-channel audio such as a home theater system has always been relatively difficult and vendors recently have come up with unique products and technologies like wireless speaker kit products or virtual surround sound to help simplify this procedure. Most of todays TVs will be set up as a multi-channel audio system. While historically TVs would have built-in stereo loudspeakers, nowadays a number of external speakers are used to let the viewer experience surround sound. In case of 5.1 surround, 6 speakers are utilized: center, left and right front, left and right rear and a subwoofer. The signal processing is modeled after the human hearing. The signal processing has an effect that will deceive the listener into presuming that the audio is coming from an alternate location. Virtual surround eliminates the remote loudspeakers and simplifies the setup and also eliminates long speaker wire runs. An alternative method for simplifying home theater setups and eliminating long speaker cable runs is to utilize wireless surround sound devices or wireless speakers. A wireless solution will usually incorporate a transmitter module that connects to the TV or source and wireless amplifiers that will be connected to the remote loudspeakers. This provides freedom to connect to every type of source. Several wireless systems have wireless amplifiers that connect to two speakers. This still requires cord runs between the two speakers. The most sophisticated wireless speaker sets utilize digital transmission to eliminate signal degradation. A number of products also utilize the 5.8 GHz band. These systems are also named sound bars.
