Caring For and Inspecting Your Safety Harness

Posted by: headm on: November 20, 2013

Regardless of the application, safety harnesses are life saving piece of equipment and as such great care and attention should be taken to look after them and ensure they are in full working order. The proper care and cleaning of a safety harness is just as important as regular inspections for damage or wear.

When storing a safety harness, it is important that they are kept in a clean, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Before inspection, you should ensure that the safety harness is clean. Wash it carefully in warm soapy water or a non biological powder and gently clean with a sponge. The harness should be hung up and allowed to dry naturally. Never use a drying room or subject the harness to direct heat such as by placing on a radiator.

The safety harness should be inspected for signs of excessive wear or abrasions, rust on buckles or D rings, rips or tears, cracks, loose stitching or fraying. Be sure to inspect the harness in good light conditions and pass it slowly through your hands to ensure close inspection.

Pre-use checks should be carried out every time and more thorough checks at least every 6 months are more frequently if the harness is used frequently or is often subjected to harsh conditions such as grit blasting.
